Minor Doll Damage: Repair It, Document It, or Stop?

A conservative repair-triage guide for dents, tears, punctures, nail and accessory damage, exposed hardware, gel deformation, and the line between supported home repair and manufacturer escalation.

A damaged area creates a strong urge to fix it immediately. That instinct is useful when the correct repair is already known. It is less useful when the owner has not yet established whether the problem is a dent, a tear, a seam failure, a finger-bone poke-through, a gel problem, a structural issue, or an arrival claim that should have been photographed before somebody introduced glue and a hair dryer to the evidence.

The safest general rule is therefore not repair immediately.

It is:

document first, remove unnecessary load, classify the damage, identify the exact product/material, then use the narrowest manufacturer-supported remedy.

This guide is about that decision. It is not one universal silicone/TPE repair recipe.

First question: did it arrive this way?

If the damage was visible on delivery, discovered during the first inspection, or may still fall inside a seller/manufacturer arrival-reporting window, treat it as an evidence problem before treating it as a repair problem.

Photograph the untouched condition, preserve the carton/packing/order/QC evidence, record the delivery time, and report the problem through the applicable seller/manufacturer route before applying glue, heat, solvent, pigment, injection material, powder, oil, or performing disassembly.

A later warranty may last much longer than an arrival-damage reporting window. They are separate clocks.

Damage classification comes before chemistry

A useful first description should say what is visibly happening without pretending the hidden cause is already known.

Useful categories include:

  • dent, compression mark, or surface deformation;
  • small surface tear or puncture;
  • seam/bond opening;
  • finger or toe internal structure poking through;
  • nail, eyelash, wig, magnet, or other cosmetic/accessory detachment;
  • hard skeleton, wire, fastener, insert, foam/core, or other internal material exposed;
  • gel/filler leakage or a filled region that has deflated or changed shape;
  • damage accompanied by changed joint behavior;
  • electronic, heated, motorized, pumped, sensored, or robotic-part damage;
  • unknown condition that needs manufacturer classification.

A small-looking opening is not automatically a minor repair. Location, depth, tension, construction, contamination, and what sits underneath matter more than somebody’s ruler photo posted without context.

Stabilize the area before making it larger

For a visible tear or puncture, stop stretching or repeatedly moving the damaged area simply to inspect it.

STARPERY’s current first-party instructions are especially useful here. When skin tears, the manufacturer tells owners to return the doll toward a natural posture, lay it flat, and keep the damaged area under no tension before using the brand’s repair method.

That is a much better first move than repeatedly flexing the damaged area to obtain increasingly dramatic photographs.

A dent is not automatically a tear

Soft material can show temporary compression, shipping impressions, folds, and shape changes without the skin actually separating.

Irontech’s current FAQ, for example, publishes different product-specific responses for some silicone and TPE dents/deformation. That matters less because every owner should copy those methods and more because the manufacturer itself treats deformation as a different problem class from a material tear.

Before reaching for adhesive, establish whether the surface is actually open.

If the mark was present at delivery, preserve it first even if it eventually proves temporary.

Minor surface repair and major damage are different support classes

ZELEX’s current quality-assurance wording provides one of the clearest first-party examples of this distinction. For verified manufacturing defects after delivery, the manufacturer describes free repair kits for minor surface repair while separately describing replacement for verified major skeleton or skin issues.

This is the useful cross-brand lesson: repair severity is not just a measurement. A narrow opening can expose hardware; a larger superficial mark can be cosmetic. The responsible party should classify the exact problem when warranty or structural involvement is possible.

Why there is no universal doll glue

Irontech’s current repair material is a good demonstration of why generic repair recipes become unreliable quickly.

The manufacturer publishes different procedures/products for silicone and TPE. Its silicone repair product further distinguishes Regular and Ultra Soft silicone repair-glue choices, while its TPE product uses a different material and different set/dry guidance. Irontech also publishes a separate A+B repair system for a gel-filled breast, explicitly scoped to Irontech products.

This is why silicone glue and TPE glue are not sufficient answers by themselves. The exact formulation, softness, finish, coating, pigments, internal construction, and manufacturer procedure can matter.

Finger and toe poke-through is its own damage class

A finger or toe internal element can sometimes push through the surrounding soft material without the whole hand, wrist, or arm skeleton being structurally broken.

FANREAL’s current Chinese after-sales material gives a narrow first-party example: for a finger-bone puncture, the manufacturer tells the owner to reposition the internal finger element and repair the skin with repair liquid.

The useful classification is therefore finger/toe poke-through, not merely tear.

If the internal element keeps pressing into the same location, looks bent/detached, or the hand/wrist behavior changed, the surface repair may only be treating the symptom.

Nail or accessory detachment is not the same as a structural bond

Manufacturers can provide nail glue and replacement cosmetic pieces. That does not mean the same adhesive belongs on every detachable or bonded component.

Keep these categories separate:

  • cosmetic nail/accessory attachment;
  • outer skin tear or puncture;
  • manufactured seam/bond separation;
  • internal hardware/skeleton exposure;
  • electronics or mixed-material assembly.

A detached nail may be straightforward. A separating neck seam or bonded load-bearing region is not merely a larger nail.

Seam openings deserve extra caution

A manufactured seam/bond can carry different stresses from an isolated surface nick.

Escalate rather than improvising when the opening:

  • widens during ordinary supported movement;
  • sits in a high-motion area such as a major crease or joint region;
  • exposes foam/core, wire, hardware, skeleton, liner, or another internal layer;
  • intersects an intimate opening or a filled/gel region;
  • follows a fall, impact, or sudden change in joint behavior;
  • has already failed after a previous repair.

There is no evidence-backed universal millimeter limit where a seam becomes safe or unsafe for home repair.

Gel-filled or deflated regions are a separate repair system

A deflated or leaking gel-filled breast, buttock, or other filled region is not merely a surface glue problem.

The outer skin can be only one layer in a system involving an internal cavity or pocket, filler chemistry, volume/pressure, injection access, and final surface closure.

Irontech’s current gel-repair product illustrates the point by providing a dedicated A+B system scoped to Irontech dolls rather than treating the problem as ordinary silicone glue.

DJP Dolls therefore does not publish a universal needle, injection amount, filler material, access point, pressure, temperature, or sealing process across brands.

Hard material exposure is an escalation signal

If you can see or feel hard internal material through an open surface, document it and reduce load on the area.

Examples include:

  • wire or finger/toe structure;
  • joint/frame metal;
  • fastener or connector;
  • rigid internal insert;
  • foam/core or another internal construction layer.

Some finger poke-through cases can have manufacturer-supported owner procedures. That exception should not be stretched into permission to push every exposed internal component back inside and glue the hole shut.

A major joint, frame, weld, hidden fastener, or recurring pressure point belongs in structural triage.

Electronics make an outer-skin problem more than cosmetic

Damage around robotic heads, ROS/mouth systems, heaters, pumps, motors, batteries, sensors, wiring, connectors, or other electronics should remain product-specific.

Water, solvent, heat, adhesive, compression, and disassembly can affect more than the elastomer surface.

When electronics are involved, document the problem and use the manufacturer’s exact power/water/service instructions before treating the exterior like an ordinary patch job.

When home repair is reasonably supported

A manufacturer-supported home repair makes more sense when all or most of the following are true:

  1. the exact manufacturer, product/revision, material and relevant softness/finish are known;
  2. the visible damage class is understood;
  3. arrival/warranty evidence has already been preserved and support permits home repair;
  4. the manufacturer provides or confirms the exact repair material/process for that product;
  5. no deeper skeleton, seam, gel, electronics, or internal-system problem is suspected unless the specific procedure covers it;
  6. the owner can keep the repaired area unloaded for the required set/cure interval;
  7. the surface has not already been contaminated or altered by incompatible chemicals, heat, adhesive, or a failed repair.

A repair kit simply existing in a manufacturer’s store is not proof that it belongs on every model or every form of damage.

Stop and escalate when the problem leaves the minor-repair lane

Contact the responsible seller/manufacturer before continuing when:

  • the damage was present on arrival or may still be a claim;
  • a core, foam, wire, fastener, skeleton or other hard internal part is exposed;
  • a tear or seam keeps widening;
  • the damage sits in a load-bearing/high-motion area and cannot be kept unloaded;
  • a joint suddenly lost support or changed its movement at the same time;
  • gel/filler leaks or a filled region deflates;
  • electronics, motors, heaters, sensors, batteries, pumps or wiring are involved;
  • the exact material/revision/finish is unknown;
  • the area is contaminated or an earlier repair failed;
  • repair would require cutting the body open, welding, hidden-joint retorque, destructive disassembly, or another invasive process without model-specific instructions.

The goal is not to make every cosmetic nick a factory-service event. It is to avoid turning an unknown problem into a larger known problem through enthusiasm.

What DJP Dolls is deliberately not turning into a universal recipe

Current evidence does not justify one cross-brand instruction for:

  • silicone glue or TPE glue;
  • solvent preparation;
  • alcohol or acetone around repairs;
  • hair-dryer temperature/settings;
  • heat or flame welding;
  • cure/set time;
  • pigment mixing;
  • stitching or suturing soft material;
  • gel injection material/volume;
  • seam reconstruction;
  • skeleton access, tightening, welding, or retorque;
  • abrasive preparation or primer;
  • one process across standard, ultra-soft, coated, gel-filled, or mixed-material products.

If a manufacturer publishes one of those steps for a specific product, preserve the exact context instead of converting it into folklore with a cleaner-looking bullet list.

Ask for a repair classification before changing the condition

When the correct damage class is uncertain, send a narrow request that forces the relevant details into one reply.

Keep a small repair record

For any repair worth doing, save:

  • exact doll/body/head/revision and material;
  • seller/order/channel;
  • date damage was first noticed;
  • location and untouched photos;
  • likely event/context without overstating cause;
  • seller/manufacturer classification;
  • exact repair material/instructions used;
  • repair date;
  • cure/rest period;
  • result after the first supported movement/use;
  • whether the repair later reopened or changed.

That record is more useful than trying to reconstruct six months later whether the mystery bottle was the silicone one, the TPE one, or the thing that arrived without a readable label.

The short version

When damage appears:

  1. decide whether it may be an arrival/warranty claim;
  2. photograph the untouched condition;
  3. remove unnecessary tension/load;
  4. identify exact product, material, softness/finish and revision;
  5. classify dent vs tear vs seam vs poke-through vs accessory vs structural/gel/electronic problem;
  6. check the manufacturer’s support classification;
  7. perform only the product-specific home repair that is actually supported;
  8. stop and escalate when internal structure, gel, electronics, widening seams, major joints or unknown materials are involved;
  9. document the repair and outcome.

The useful skill is not memorizing one repair recipe. It is recognizing when the problem actually matches the recipe in your hand.
